Vancouver is located in South Western Canada, within the province of British Columbia. This area has shelter from extreme weather due to the Vancouver Island. Vancouver is well-known for being a somewhat wet city. However, out of the main Canadian cities it is actually the 2nd driest just after Victoria. In comparison to the remainder of Canada, this city enjoys a milder climate throughout the year, where the temperatures hardly ever drop below freezing. Snowfall is also a very rare occurrence in this city.

The average daytime temperatures in the summer months is around 25C or 77F, and in the height of the summer months rainfall is uncommon. Also known for its outstanding scenery, Vancouver is the city that definitely takes full advantage of its outstanding location. Sandwiched between the Coastal Mountain range and the Pacific Ocean, offers this area with a beautiful backdrop. On the Northshore which are few minutes from Downtown Vancouver, you fill find the iconic North Shore Mountain range that offers spectacular views over the city and variety of ski resorts. North Shore also features temperate rain-forest areas, which once covered this entire area, before the city was developed into the Vancouver that we know of today.

A Brief History Of Vancouver

Vancouver derived its name from a British explorer known as Captain George Vancouver, who sailed into this area in the year 1792. However, before this the region was inhabited for centuries by indigenous people now called the First Nations.

This city was incorporated officially in the year 1886, once it became an essential port for the purpose of shipping limber across the world, more particularly to China. The very first settlement in the downtown peninsula was known as Granville, where you will now find a historic Gastown district. A couple of years after this the transcontinental-railway arrived in this area, where the population started to boom.

Demographics

Due to its location on the Pacific Coast, this city has been a popular magnet for many immigrants, especially from Asia. In fact, Vancouver is now the 2nd biggest Chinatown in North America. It is also home to a highly ethnical diverse population across the globe. Which is maintained constantly by all the immigrants that come here each year.

The overall population in Vancouver City is around 612,000 while the Metro area has an astounding population of more than 2 million people, which makes it the 3rd biggest city in Canada, closely after Montreal and Toronto.

Vancouver in mainly English-speaking, but as mentioned before, this highly ethnical city, means it is very common to hear a variety of languages spoken all around you. In fact, about 52% of the residents in city and 43% of the Vancouver Metro residents all have a 1st language that is other than English.
